The Om, sometimes also written as Aum, is a sacred sound known as the universal sound of the cosmos. With roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the sound is now used in spiritual practices worldwide. The closest English translation of the word "Om" is "divine." The sound itself is composed of three Sanskrit letters: A (pronounced like "awe"), U (pronounced like "oooh"), and M (pronounced like "mmmm"). Together, these three letters represent the divine trinity of Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). The Om is also said to represent the four states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, sleeping, and transcendental. In yoga, the Om is often chanted at the beginning and end of a class to connect with the divine energy surrounding us. It can also be used as a mantra during meditation to help quiet the mind. When chanted out loud, the sound of the Om creates vibrations that are said to promote physical, mental and emotional healing. If you're new to chanting Om, start by finding a comfortable seat with your spine straight. Place one hand over your heart and one hand on your belly. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. As you inhale, mentally recite the letter A. As you exhale, mentally repeat the letter U. Continue this pattern until you reach Mmmmmm on the exhale. Once you go Mmmmmm, hold it for as long as you can before slowly releasing it back to a regular breathing pattern. Chant Om for as long or as short as you like - there is no right or wrong way to do it! Let the sound wash over you and notice how it makes you feel. Calmer? More centred? More connected? Take those good vibes with you off the mat and into your day!
